Calth Project: First Mini Completed

The first of the stoic Ultramarine's tac squad is finished save for the decals and base. The detail work is self explanatory for the most part, which is what I liked about this paint scheme. Simple, but it looks good. No mixing paints or slugging it out through three or four coats of paint. That being said, the Ultras don't have a complicated scheme anyway, and of course I still have a fair amount of minis left to paint.

This was the first mini I've edge highlighted, which I think adds a lot to the mini. The power pack has the silver bits because that's how they were painted on the GW website and on the Calth box. I will get some better quality pictures with better lighting when I have more time. These are taken with just regular room light on an iPhone 6s.

Calth Update

I've been able to make some tremendous progress so far today. I've got several minis started but I'm focusing on one mini as a test model, although if he comes out badly I don't know what to do with it, but I do want to see the finished product.

As you might remember, the last step for me is actually assembling the model, so the minis are still in pieces at this point and there's not much to look at.

I did some initial edge highlighting which was a lot of fun. I need to go back and touch up some spots as you can tell, but I think it will add a lot to the mini when all the components are assembled and highlighted.

My paint scheme is very simple which is helpful. I use a Krylon Grey primer that is fantastic. Tried the new Corax White spray, but was left frustrated again. (I am having to strip that model). GW White primers are still poop and ridiculously overpriced. $16 for a can of spray paint that will only work if it's shaken up for the exact right amount of time, the humidity is perfect, and the temperature is good, and it'll still be poop probably, or $4 for a can that just works all the time. Take your pick.

After I prime in Kyrlon Grey I basecoat with Macragge Blue spray paint. I love basing with a spray because it's a lot faster and goes on smooth. I do a Nuln Oil wash in the recesses after that, paint the webbing Abaddon Black then go to work on the details.

I painted the chest straps black, followed by a coat of Leadbelcher. I washed with Nuln Oil then highlighted with Ironbreaker which looks good when it's finished. Might be able to finish this guy tomorrow.

Betrayal At Calth Project

Been awhile since I've posted, but it feels good to be back at it. Work has kept me busy for the last few months, and I got bogged down working on Genesis. With the new release of the Betrayal at Calth boxed set I knew I had to buy it. I've always been intrigued by boxed sets, and a Horus Heresy boxed set is a can't miss.

My twin brother and I decided to do a joint project. We've actually made plans for many joint armies, but the Calth boxed set is the most doable at this point. I've taken the Ultramarines (I've got Gulliman's blood after all) and Chris has taken the Word Bearers. He is mired deep in the throes of the enemy (law school) so not much painting at the moment for him, but I've gotten off to a good start; albeit, with some missteps.

I've chosen a simple paint scheme from the Sons of Ultramar painting guide (totally forget about the Calth painting guide--whoops). Prime grey then basecoat in Macragge Blue spray, which looks great and goes on really fast. After that it's relatively simple detail work.

I'll have some pictures up soon since I've already made decent headway on a few minis. The Ultramarines side only have a tac squad and termies, so not too many minis. I march for Macragge!

Genesis Chapter Company Champion

Finished! Well except for the base, but I wanted to get these pictures out. As usually I took a few without the flash, but my camera can struggle to focus in just plain lighting when it's that close of a shot. Once I get the base completed I will do a proper photo shoot with daylight lamps and white background. For now though I am happy to finish this mini, the first of the command squad.

WIP Company Champion Almost Finished

Today is the day for my company champion, he is just about finished, lacking only his left pauldron, slight detail work and sand on his base to be completely finished. I detailed the purity seals and bolt pistol on the back of his combat shield yesterday and this morning. Sword and handle are finished as well. I painted the handle Codex Grey (yes an old bottle) before applying the Rhinox Hide to get a lighter brown color. When I used Rhinox Hide for the boots on the Scouts, I just painted the brown onto the basecoat black and it was very dark, so I tried to lighten it up a bit.

WIP Company Champion

Off to a good an early start at the painter's table this morning. I have a somewhat busy afternoon, but I wanted to share some of the progress I've made on this model. I am trying to get him across the line today or tomorrow and hopefully his command squad brothers by next month. I've been going back and from cosplay to painting, which is a nice way to keep from getting bogged down on one project. This morning I basically worked a lot on the gold detail of the mini. The torso was already completed, but I finished the helm (which may require some touchup).

Cosplay Update: Right Arm Completed

Really excited to get the elbow plate finished, which was the last part of the right arm. Here are all the arm pieces together.

The upper arm and forearm will touch at the bottom and both fit partially inside the plate. To get a fully movable forearm, I will bolt the pieces together with the elbow plate and install a hinge/joint.

I want these suits to look great but too also have some functionality, and the arms being able to bend at the elbows go a long way toward achieving that goal. I will be out most of this weekend, but Monday I will be back at it. For now I am going to do some painting and clean my work space.

If you want 3d prints for a Space Marine, send me an email (look at my contact page) and I'll send you the files.

Cosplay Update: Forearm and Upper Arm

Blog update as promised! Once again everything took longer than expected, so not as much progress as I hoped. I didn't even get to paint today, but I will definitely do some tomorrow. The forearm and upper arm were not hard to complete, just a little tedious as usual with folding all the right tabs and getting everything put together right.

The only remaining part needed to complete this arm, which is the right arm, is the elbow plate that actually connects the two arm pieces together. I am working on a way to make this a movable joint, I've never really seen a cosplay space marine that could bend at the elbows, or the elbow was fixed in a bent position.

Plans for today

No pictures in this post yet, but I wanted to share what I should get done today, and I will post updates later tonight. I'm focusing on doing cosplay today. I have completely finished the right forearm, and I should (literally within the hour) finish the upper arm portion of the suit, and then I just have to finish the elbow plate.

After I complete the right arm I will start on the left, again hopefully today. The arms have actually come together nicely and are probably the least complicated pieces. There's a lot to explain about proper scale and fitting the arms together to create a movable joint, but I'll detail that when I actually have pictures.

My third goal of the day is to get some painting done on my company champion. Just a little more detail work with the gold and I can glue his shield arm on and his helm. I will split that into a separate post.

So that's it for today, more posts to follow later. Let's get out there and get some work done!

Genesis Company Champion WIP

Been awhile since I've posted, just have gotten so busy with work and summer traveling. I have made progress recently on my Company Champion which I wanted to share just a few pictures of. Hopefully I can finish him within the next week or so, I have also been making good progress on my Cosplay Space Marine too, which I'll share later. But take a look at these pictures, I've pretty pleased with how this mini is turning out.

Greetings! I have made great progress today on the torso. Just a short post, but wanted to show some pictures and let you know what I've accomplished today.

The Great Cosplay Build

Hello again! It's been awhile since I've posted. Work has kept me busy for the last month or two, but it's been good to get back into the world of 40k. I was a little tuckered out from all the painting, so the sabbatical was good for me. I have since started on my most ambitious project ever, a cosplay build for a contest from Eternal Crusade.

WIP Command Squad

Just a quick update for tonight, I've also been working on some new pictures for the Libby with better lighting which you can see on the Photo Gallery. Should have a new video out soon too. Tonight I could only paint a little, but I got most of the second coat of red done on the company champion.

The shoulder pads are finished as well, and the shield is done but not the shield arm as you can see in the picture. All I have to do is a second coat of Ushabti bone on the robe, wash the torso and legs, and I can glue those two pieces together.

Also made some progress on the Apothecary, getting closer to gluing that model together as well. That's all for tonight, don't forget to like Building Genesis on Facebook and subscribe on YouTube!

Command Squad Update

Excited about the progress I made today! I believe I am still close to two weeks from finishing the command squad, as once the detail work starts everything slows down. However, I did finish the first coat of Khorne Red, and started on some of the second coat.

Librarian Pictures

The final pictures of my now fully completed Librarian. I still have some light work to finish on the base, but the model is finished for now. Arduous task to get this guy across the line, but I like how he turned out. Take a look!

FTGT Budget Challenge January Progress

Well, push has come to shove now in terms of getting my January models across the line. I can take solace in the fact that I have pretty much painted every time I got a chance, I just have been so busy that I haven't been able to work on anything much. Plus, the librarian took up about half of the month. I will still try to finish as close to schedule as possible but right now I will probably just manage to get the second coat of Khorne Red finished by the end of the week, and detail painting will take a week or more, so I will remain two weeks behind.

January Pledge Update

No pictures tonight unfortunately, but I wanted to give a quick update to the progress I've made on my January pledge, the command squad.

I have nearly finished priming all the pieces for the command squad. I completely assembled the standard bearer, which is not the normal way I build and paint minis, but I wanted to try something different.

Librarian Finished

Finally finished the Librarian! Still have to sand the base as you can see, but I am glad to get this model over the line. Lots of detail and tedious work, and I will probably go back later and touch up here and there, but it's finished for now. The mini is my December plan for FTGT's Hobby Budget challenge, so I'm a little behind schedule. I have already started on my January minis though, so hopefully I can stay on track for this month. More pictures to come later!

Saturday's Plans

Finally have a day with nothing else to do really except paint some minis (perks of being single haha). I am going to pick up the Gehenna's Gold I have been missing for awhile, and then I will be able to finish the Librarian. All that remains really is a lot of gold detail, washing some of the parchment, doing some of the purity seals, painting the staff arm and storm bolter hand with the mix coat of blue, and hitting the whole model with some touch up here and there.

Deathstorm Tyranids for sale

I have just listed all of the Deathstorm Tyranid models on eBay if you are interested. You can check them out here. Just a 5 day auction so don't miss out! Would be a great addition to an existing force or the foundation for a new force. Also includes the exclusive Spawn of Cryptus Broodlord.

January Budget Challenge

I had to push back my schedule a bit because the libby was taking longer than expected, so for January I will be doing the command squad. Moving everything back actually helps because I had an extra month on the back end. I'm missing some paint I need for the libby, so I went ahead and started on the command squad. Hopefully, I can get the paint on Thursday and finish the librarian by the end of the week. Until then I can go ahead and assemble and base the command squad so as not to waste time.
